Now it's a fun, creative hobby for anyone. Ordinarily, stitches are knitted in the same order in every row, and the wales of the fabric run parallel and vertically along the fabric.

A wale can split into two or more wales using increases, most commonly involving a yarn over. There is a cylinder with slots for the needles in the machine and the needles have latches. A beginner is naturally clumsy because they are not comfortable with using two needles.

This is used to great effect in lace knitting, which consists of making patterns and pictures using such holes, rather than with the stitches themselves. Flat knitting is usually used to knit flat pieces like scarves, blankets, afghans, and the backs and fronts of sweaters. In the knit stitch on the left, the next (red) loop passes through the previous (white) loop from below, whereas in the purl stitch (right), the next stitch enters from above.
